Kentucky Car Accidents: What You Need To Know

At Levy Law Offices, we have a thorough understanding of insurance and car accident issues that are specific to Kentucky. If you were recently injured in an accident, we can work to maximize your compensation and help you turn your crash into CASH!
Kentucky Car Insurance: An Overview
State law requires drivers to have the following types of liability insurance coverage at a minimum:
- $25,000 for bodily injury per person involved in an accident
- $50,000 for total bodily injury per accident
If you were seriously injured in an accident with a driver who has only the minimum auto liability insurance, your costs could quickly exceed the amount to be paid by the other driver’s insurance policy. That is why many people choose to purchase underinsured motorist (UIM) coverage, which kicks in to provide additional compensation if the other driver’s insurance isn’t sufficient to cover your costs.

No-Fault Insurance In Kentucky
An additional type of coverage is no-fault insurance, which is also called personal injury protection (PIP) coverage. In fact, Kentucky requires that vehicle insurance policies have PIP coverage — with the exception of motorcycle insurance policies.
Regardless of who was at fault for a crash, PIP coverage pays up to $10,000 in injury-related expenses per person, per accident. With PIP coverage, however, the injured party cannot sue the at-fault party for damages — with some exceptions. The injured party can seek compensation from the at-fault party for:
- Medical costs exceeding $1,000
- Broken bones
- Permanent injury
- Permanent disfigurement
If you have PIP coverage, you can reject your right-to-sue limitations if you do so with the proper form and submit it to the Department of Insurance. However, if you do that, you also lose your PIP coverage.
