Delayed symptoms may indicate serious injury

At the very least, a traffic accident is disruptive to your life. At the most, it can change your life forever. Injuries suffered in a motor vehicle accident can be devastating, and you may know in an instant that you are badly hurt and need medical attention. Unfortunately, serious injuries are not always obvious, and even a low-speed traffic accident can result in injuries.

The sudden and violent jerking when another vehicle strikes yours can cause your body to move in unnatural ways, and this can cause painful damage. If you are in an accident, it is never a good idea to refuse to allow emergency medical technicians to look you over or even transport you to an Ohio hospital. Even if EMTs do not think you are injured, you may wish to follow up with your doctor since some injuries may remain hidden for days.

Signs to look for

One important reason why legal advisors recommend not signing an insurance settlement right away is that symptoms of serious injuries may not appear until days after the accident. This is also a good reason to begin right away establishing a medical history related to potential injuries. You may not feel soreness immediately after a rigorous workout or helping a friend move heavy furniture, and likewise the violence of your accident may not bring pain and soreness until a day or two – or even a week or two – have passed.

Some of the delayed signs of a potentially serious injury include the following:

  • Pain in your abdomen could mean you are bleeding internally.
  • Headaches have many causes, including a concussion, blood clot or neck injury.
  • Pain in your shoulder, neck or back could be whiplash, but it may also indicate a more serious spinal injury.
  • Tingling or numbness in your hands, feet or other limbs may mean you have a herniated disc.

Don't overlook your emotional state as well. If you are having difficulty sleeping, feeling anxious or depressed, or suffering from symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder, your doctor should know about this. It may require psychological intervention, or it could indicate a brain injury.

While these are common signs of injury, you know your body. Anything that seems off or abnormal in the weeks after an accident is worth bringing to the attention of your doctor. When you reach a time when your symptoms seem to have leveled off, you may wish to seek legal advice about accepting a settlement or pursuing further compensation.
