Dangerous Cincinnati Highways: I-75

Just south of Cincinnati, I-75 merges with I-71. Commuters from the Northern Kentucky suburbs of Florence, Erlanger, Fort Mitchell, and Covington pack this interstate every day, while travelers use this route to get into Cincinnati and to other parts of Ohio and Michigan beyond. I-75/I-71 crosses the Ohio River over the dangerous, careworn Brent Spence Bridge, giving motorists a view of downtown as well as the riverfront area.

North of Cincinnati I-71 and I-75 split, with I-75 heading north through the suburbs of St. Bernard, Reading, Glendale, and Sharonville. From there, I-75 continues to Bethany and Kettering, and on to Dayton. Commuters from the north of the city often use this interstate to approach the city, bringing heavy traffic during rush hour.levy_dangerous-intersections_infographic-1

I-75 runs for about 210 miles through Ohio, but it is the stretch that cuts through the heart of Cincinnati that landed on our list as one of the most dangerous highways in the state. Tens of thousands of workers and leisure travelers drive this section of I-75 every day, and most make it home safely. Some, however, suffer serious or fatal injuries in car accidents.

What are common causes of accidents on I-75?

Some areas are inherently dangerous because of road design or other factors, but this stretch of I-75 is not dangerous on its own. Instead, it is careless drivers and the high volume of traffic that cause most of the crashes on I-75 in Cincinnati. Some common causes of Cincinnati accidents include:

  • Losing control
  • Speeding
  • Improper merging
  • Improper lane changes
  • Following too closely

These negligent driving practices often lead to rollover accidents, drivers running off the road and overcorrecting, and even passengers being ejected from the car. All of these accidents can cause severe trauma to drivers and passengers in the involved vehicles.

Crashes can also result from driving while fatigued, distracted, or under the influence. These behaviors often lead to rear-end collisions or wrong way crashes, like the one that killed three people in June of this year.

Where are the most dangerous sections of I-75?

There are seven 1/10 mile stretches of I-75 in Cincinnati that see a hundred or more accidents each year, according to an article published in the Cincinnati Business Courier. Based on statistics listed in the article and provided by the Ohio Department of Transportation, the most dangerous interchanges on I-75 in Cincinnati include:

  • I-75 and Norwood Lateral Parkway: The area around the I-75 merge sees an average of 360 crashes each year, including almost 76 injuries or fatalities annually. This is one of the top five most dangerous stretches of road in Cincinnati.
  • I-75 at the Eighth Street Viaduct: Every year, almost 325 crashes occur in this area, with an average of 54.54 injuries and fatalities.
  • I-75 and I-275: The convergence of these two highways is especially busy during rush hour, leading to an average of 260.64 accidents each year, including more than 48 injuries or fatalities.
  • I-75 south of Central Parkway: This interchange sees an average of 230.59 wrecks each year, and averages 43.07 injuries or fatalities annually.
  • I-75 at Glendale Milford Road: The 1/10-mile stretch surrounding this exit averages 197.65 accidents with 35.55 injuries or fatalities annually.
  • I-75 at Murray Road/Laidlaw Avenue: This stretch sees approximately the same number of crashes on average as the I-75 and Glendale Milford Road area (196.87), but an average of 42 people suffer injuries or die in crashes here each year.
  • Butler County Veterans Highway E ramp to I-75N: An average of 55.9 accidents occur on this ramp each year, with an average of 15.8 injuries or fatalities.

How can I stay safe on these roads?

You can begin to ensure your own safety - and the safety of those around you - by always behaving responsibly behind the wheel. This includes putting your phone away while you drive, limiting other distractions, and never driving while intoxicated or fatigued.

However, we know from our many years as personal injury attorneys that even the safest driver can be involved in an accident.
